Chabad of Charleston

A personal invitation.

Dear friends,

Welcome is such a powerful word in our language! It may just be two syllables, yet it takes on a truly special meaning to the two of us. Ever since we arrived in this spectacular part of the world a decade or so ago, we have been welcomed by so many extraordinary people. Proud native Charlestonians. Happy ‘transplants’ from throughout the country and the world. Active couples. Young families. Involved seniors. They all shared then, as they do today, a common goal…to lead healthy and prosperous lives built upon, and enriched by, our Jewish faith and heritage.

Rabbi Yossi and Sarah Refson

Upon our arrival in the Lowcountry, we quickly had the pleasure of welcoming many, within our community, to our home for what immediately became invigorating Shabbat dinners. We were fortunate enough to join in celebration and in solemn observance with all kinds of wonderful people from the moment we became locals. From those early days emanated the dream of building a special place that would welcome any and all who shared our dreams, hope, vision and passion. Through the tireless efforts and financial support of so many, the Charleston Center for Jewish Life came to life in the Fall of 2016.

The completion of our incredible facility represents only the beginning of our collective journey. Yes, our Shabbat dinners are now hardier than ever, and, better still, able to welcome so many more friends. Our events and programming now have a more solid footing from which to spring. Our community outreach is and will be better achieved. Maybe most importantly, our faith and our heritage is becoming more easily preserved. The Center has quickly become a haven of education and enrichment for all of us, not only for our youth. Quite simply, we have, as hoped, eliminated many of the hurdles that previously had made it more difficult to connect.

In closing, please accept our sincere welcome as well as our hope that you quickly welcome others to the Charleston Center for Jewish Life. Please do not come to observe; plan on becoming part of the fabric of our extended community from the moment you turn into our driveway. Bring your curiosity, your pride, your warmth, your thoughts, your concerns and your questions. Bring your thirst and your hunger, figuratively and literally. One thing is certain, the moment we get to welcome a new friend, the moment we all become closer to achieving our mission of embracing, preserving, and building upon the faith and heritage that makes us thrive. Come as an individual or as a family, but plan on returning as a member of a loving community that welcomes all.

Warmly,

Sarah and Rabbi Yossi Refson
